We use dots to indicate multiplication in the US as well, but here we place the dots midway (vertically speaking).
2.3=6 doesn't look right to me, but 2•3=6 does. You could also try using 2·3=6. In these examples I use ascii(249) and ascii(250) respectively to get the dots placed in the middle.
a simple way to use these ascii characters is to hold down the "Alt" key while typing in the 3 digit ascii code, then release the "Alt" key. (think of the "Alt" key like a "Shift" key). Not all standard ascii characters are available using this method, but there's enough to get by. Also, you must have "Num Lock" enabled on your keyboard before doing this.
