Ice Floating in Water (Posted on 2005-04-21) Difficulty: 3 of 5

You have a cube of ice floating in a glass of water. The question is what fraction of the ice will be above the water line? Assume that the ice is not bobbing.

Most of you have probably heard the answer to this before. But please provide a proof or solution, along with your assumptions.

If you do not believe that the density of water could affect the fraction of ice cube to be above the water line.

I give an obvious example to you.  Have you ever been to the Red Sea?  You might be a flog in the well and do not know the Red Sea.  The density of water is high due to the water is full of salt.  Even if you are a fatty man, you would definitely float in the water and have most of your body to be exposed in the air.  If you place the ice cube in the Red Sea, much fraction of the ice cube could float in the air compared to if you are in the sea.  You must not be a book worm.  You must tackle the question carefully.

It is like a flog.  If the flog is in the well, its view is so narrow that it mentions that the sky is so small.  However, when it comes out of the well, his view is broader.

In regard of Science, I know much from the books in the Institute.  However, my view is narrow if I do not view the external environment.  In theory, it is subject to many restrictions and limitations.  It is up to us to apply to the society.

It is the same as Economics.  Teacher touches on supply and demand curves subject.  When supply of goods is more than demand, the price will drop.  Is this theory practical?  You might say is practical.  You try to apply the concept here and there and conclude that it is like this and not like that.  However, in practical, it is not so.  There are many factors that affect it.  For instance, if the company's boss is so rigid that it must stick to that pice, it turns up that the price will not drop.  Other might store the goods in time to come to sell and it might not lead to the drop of price of goods.  There could be many other factors affect it.

In the Institute or school, we study a kind of concept & we must know its limitations & restrictions.  To tackle a question like this, you should be a flog that crosses over the well to have the broader view & apply your theory correctly to the question.

If a person just knows how to study & yet does not know how to apply & does not know how the principle can be applicable to the society as a whole, he is simply a book worm or a flog in the well.

If my words have hurt, I apologise.  But I am telling the truth.

Thanks.
