What is the maximum number of points in the Euclidean plane with the property that given any three points, at least two are at distance one apart?

Possible solution

I managed six using an equilateral grid as follows:

   x      x       x

x      x      x

and you cannot add a seventh point in this style, but I'm not certain this is *the* way to do this.
