Firstly I have chosen to reply to your comment.
Having done so,  I am presented with a formatting toolbar above the text box into which I am writing.

I think that you will find that by clicking the PI/Sigma button (1st left) you may chose the particular character.  Hopefully the following shows us Alpha ^2 !  No, didn't happen within this window, but I think Fredrico indicate that a difficulty that I apparently have with NS 7.1 could be behind it.

To investigate, just pretend that you want to reply to a comment and test out the toolbar above!
