Breaking glass (Posted on 2005-06-30) Difficulty: 2 of 5
You have a square glass panel with 24 cm sides and a ring with 5 cm internal diameter.
Cut the glass in 4 identical pieces such that you can slide them through the ring.

Solution TRY THIS | Comment 7 of 17 |

TRY FOUR(4) IDENTICAL PIECES EACH 3 CM THICK.

THE PIECE IS 3 CM WIDE IN THE SHAPE OF A SQUARE HORSESHOE, BUT 24 CM ON ONE SIDE, AND 21 CM ON THE OTHER.  2 OPPOSING IDENTIAL PIECES WOULD OCCUPY 1/2 OF THE SQUARE, 4 PIECES WOULD OCCUPY THE ENTIRE SQUARE.  THE WIDEST PART OF THE HORSESHOE WOULD BE THE CORNERS AT THE BASE WITH AN ANGLE MEASUREMENT OF 4.25 INCHES FROM THE INSIDE ANGLE TO THE OUTSIDE ANGLE. EACH PIECE BEING TURNED AS IT WAS SLID THROUGH THE 5 CM INSIDE DIAMETER CIRCLE.
