It's black when it's not in use, it's red when it's in use, and it's grey when you're done using it. What can this be??

Without looking at anyone else's comment, I would have to say the answer is coal. Before it is used, it is black. When in use, it turns red from the "fire". After it burns out, it is grey ash.
