my view is this - while the volume of sand per unit of time will stay roughly constant (it actually decreases a bit as less sand on top of it is pushing down), it will *appear* to run qucker due to the old fashioned shape of the hourglass (that is, the inverted triangle on top of a righted triangle) As the sand level lowers, the amount of sand contained in the top layer decreases - which increases the rate that the top layer is dropping.
So this is dependant on having a "traditional" hourglass, but it does hold
