There are N players in a tennis tournament. Assuming the initial pairings are done randomly, what are the odds that a certain pair will play each other?

Some Thoughts re(2): The full tournament | Comment 22 of 32 |

The odds that they both meet in the second round are 1/2 (the odds that the first player wins his first match) times 1/2 (the odds that the second player also wins) times 2/3 (the odds that they didn't meet in the first round), which equals 1/6.

Adding the odds that they did meet in the first round (1/3) together, produces 1/2 as it should.
