I remember back in elementary school when we learned about roman
numerals. There was a set of specific rules and each number had
exactly one way of being written. Actually, I don't really recall
what the rules were... (was 99 IC or XCIX?) When I went to Italy
some years ago, it became quite apparent that the Romans did not follow
these rules. IIII and IV were interchangeable, for
instance. I was rather disappointed, and I wondered if teaching
roman numerals really had any true value. I suppose it might
indirectly teach about logic and math...
