Well, OK, your argument does hold for a square cover. But in the case of a triangular one, for instance, even if you turn the cover on its side, it will be AT LEAST as long as one of the sides. And there is no way to fit that through the triangle area, since a side is the longest straight line in an equilatteral triangle.
I think the same holds for a pentagon (and any regular n-gon where n is odd), but I am not so sure about them.
