I came up with a slightly different solution that seems to work.

Mr. Blake - chair 1, Mrs. Blake - chair 2, Mr. Crane - chair 3, Mrs. Astor - hostess - chair 4, Mrs. Crane - chair 5, Mr. Davis - chair 6, Mrs. Davis - chair 7, Mrs. Astor - chair 8

Looking at this the positions match up the clues.

Mrs. Astor sits in chair 8 and looks towards the table. This makes Mr. Blake sit on her left, satisfying clue 1. Mrs. Crane sits in chair 5 which agrees with clue 2. The hostess - Mrs. Astor is the only one sitting between a married couple and only one person sits between 2 men. So the answer according to this solution is Mrs. Blake insulted the hostess.
