Though they never met each other, Evelyn loved George, and even she was too old for him, they carried on writing until late in life. George married in 1880. He converted to Catholicism in 1930 and during World War II he served with the Royal Marines. Partly in recognition of this, Evelyn's subsequent writings analyzed the character of that war. Her first full-length novel had been published in 1859. Evelyn died in 1966 in Somerset. She is buried in Highgate Cemetery. He died at age 62, after having published his autobiography in 1964 and lived one year longer than she did.
All these statements are true. How can this be?
George Eliot (who was a bird writing under a man's name) died long before Evelyn Waugh (a bloke who sounded like his parents wanted a girl) was born. He must have liked a lot of the stuff she wrote, many people still do. She got married just after her male muse died just eight months before she did. Evelyn was well into all that Catholic lark as evinced by his novel, Brideshead Revisited. He was in the Marines and wrote a trilogy about the war. George Eliot's first novel was Adam Bede in 1859. Evelyn Waugh died at 62 whereas George Eliot died at 61. Evelyn Waugh's autobiography was called A Little Learning in 1964.
