If this is it, I am Nobel prize material.  It is just a (very) wild guess.

The 1, the 8 and 69 are all mirror-able.  Consider the 1 as a vertical line, also the 8 can be cut in two and 9 and 6 are mirror-image-like.  Well it was a wild guess and I also liked lateral thinking.

But if the above is true, then the sequence would be 1, 8, 69, 88, 96, 101, 111, 181, ...

Which is Lemings sequence!
