Though they never met each other, Evelyn loved George, and even she was too old for him, they carried on writing until late in life. George married in 1880. He converted to Catholicism in 1930 and during World War II he served with the Royal Marines. Partly in recognition of this, Evelyn's subsequent writings analyzed the character of that war. Her first full-length novel had been published in 1859. Evelyn died in 1966 in Somerset. She is buried in Highgate Cemetery. He died at age 62, after having published his autobiography in 1964 and lived one year longer than she did.
