I drift forever with the current,
Down these long canals they've made.
Tame, yet wild, I run elusive,
Multitasking to your aid.
Before I came, the world was darker,
Colder, sometimes – rougher, true.
But though I might make living easy,
I'm good at killing people too.

I think it's pollution.

"Drift forever with the current" = floats along with the wind
"Down these long canals" = Smokestacks from factories
"Tame yet wild, I run elusive" = Make and control pollution, but once it's in the air, we can't grab it back or get rid of it.
"Multitasking.." = That one's a mystery to me, but:
"World was darker, colder, rougher" = Coal power plants produce artificial light from electricity, pollution creates global warming, and th electricity definitely makes our lives easier
"good at killing people" = pollution lowers life expectancy in big cities, and causes many health problems.
