I went into the woods and got it.
I sat down to seek it.
I brought it home with me because I couldn't find it.
What is it?

Here's the tick scenario: I went into the woods and got a tick, but didn't know it--it was on my back. ("I went into the woods and got it.") I heard these woods might have lots of ticks, so after a while, I sat down and examined myself, but didn't find any ("I sat down to seek it"). So, when I went home it was still on me. ("I broght it home with me because I couldn't find it.")
How do you do that with a splinter? When you get it, you know it, and you know right where it is. You may not be able to get it out right away, but you can't say you couldn't find it. In fact, you wouldn't even need to "seek it."
I say it must be a tick.
