I am a plateau, holding forty-two sheep.

The sheep are held in six sets of seven. The first, third, fourth, fifth and seventh sheep are black. The remaining two are white.

Someone using me to my full potential can even cause people to cry.

What am I?

This riddle should strike a chord with people with similar interests as me. I write this with plenty of strings attached.

A 42-string harp.

The reference to sheep alludes to the fact that the strings were once made from sheep guts.

The pattern of color for the string sets may infer a specific variation of the 42-string harp that is sought after, but as I lack the knowledge of these variations, I will leave it to another or Jack Lim to identify.

(I just now note that Old Original Oskar! has made the same guess.  I am glad I am not alone in mine.)
