I admit, I had to look this up. I got the first part of the analogy immediately, but then I thought you must be talking about Get Smart's own Agent 13, the guy who was always stuck in some terrible uncomfortable undercover position - in an ice machine or trash can or something. But he didn't have a love interest, and he was a man. A quick Google search brought up the Marvel Comics character of the same alias, though.

For the record, I'm much younger than 40-something, but I watched Get Smart reruns on Nick at Nite all the time when I was younger. Fantastic show, can't wait for the new complete DVD box set to make it to stores later this year.
