But that's obviously/logically false! What should he have said?

I am actually going to have to back up Woody Allen on this one. If he assumes you only have one date on Saturday night (unless you are speed dating) then the probability of having two dates is 0.
However, because the two events are disjoint, they are not independent and thus we can't be sure the probabilities are equivalent when added together. If they are then they do double.
