The variation of Sudoku, Josie has presented here, is known as a Jigsaw Sudoku  or polyomino Sudoku where the grids are made up of polyomino regions.  In this specific case, 8x8 polyomino regions -- thus, this puzzle would be called an octomino Sudoku.
