A set of numbers {10, 21, 17, 12, x} has the property that the mean is equal to the median.
What could the value of x be?

If x = -10, the numbers are -10, 10, 12, 17, 21, and the median is still 12 while the mean is 10.
The median also cannot be 21, as when x = 45, the mean will be 21, but the median will still be 17: 10,12,17,21,45.
