How did he die? (Posted on 2003-06-02) Difficulty: 3 of 5
The police finds the following scenario:

A man is hung up in the middle of a room (like in the movies, with a rope and stuff). The room has only one door, and no windows. There is NOTHING in the room except for the rope and some water on the floor. The room is in the middle of a desert, where nobody lives. Apart from the truck he came with, there's only 30 miles of sand to every direction of the room

The police assures that the man has been dead for a couple of hours and that no one else has been in that room for at least a couple of days. Of course, he couldn't have hung himself by jumping or doing something like that.

So how did the man actually die??

The sequence of events leading to the untimely demise of the said individual are enumerated hereunder as follows:

(i) The man carried a large chunk of ice with him and put it down
on the floor directly under the ceiling.

(ii) He climbed upon the chunk of ice enabling him to reach a hook
that is located in the ceiling.

(iii) He took out a rope, tied one end of it to the hook and the
other end is tied to his neck.

(iv) He remained standing atop the ice chunk. As the ice began to melt the rope tightened upon his neck thus suffocating the man.

It is needless to mention that after all the ice was melted away and with most of the water being evaporated in the desert atmosphere, only a small amount of water was visible in the room.
