Wise Wizard (Posted on 2007-12-02) Difficulty: 3 of 5
An evil king locked a wizard in a dungeon with nothing but a chair and a shovel. There is a window in the room, but the wizard can't reach it using the chair. The dungeon is surrounded by a cement parking lot that stretches 100 feet in every direction.

The wizard uses the shovel to dig a 50 feet long tunnel and still manages to escape.

How?

There are actually several possibilities....

(1) Having found an underground cavern that has a cave entrance into the enchanted forest beyond the parking lot, there was no need to dig further, just a bit of spelunkering.

(2) Being a wizard, the wizard simply uses a teleportation spell to escape.  The tunnel was dug downward to get far enough away from the magic-dampening concrete.

(3) Using the time of excavation to think, the wizard realizes -- though he can't reach the window by using only the chair, he can lean the shovel against the wall atop the chair and climb the extra few inches to reach the window and escape - or - standing on the chair, he uses the shovel as a makeshift grapple with the handle acting as the 'rope' with which he climbs up to the window and escapes.

(4) Another solution (and I believe may be along the lines of Katwoman's thought) is that the wzard's excavation raised the floor of the dungeon to the height of the window, with additional dirt to form a ramp down to the parking lot. The wizard simply then walks down to the parking lot and escapes.
