Ed, I think you might be overthinking things! ;)

When I see a string of 26 characters, there's really only one sequence that comes to mind. But I'm not sure if Charlie is looking for one answer here, or two.

The title suggests a two-part problem, and if I'm on the right track, then the English answer would be x=3, y=1, while the French answer would be x=3, y=2. (I'll also offer the German answer: x=1, y=3.)

But I'll let you double back and figure out why that might be. :)
