In general, when a pure substance or mixture goes from liquid to solid, the molecules in it get closer resulting in a higher density.
If this is so why does ice float in water?
Even from just looking at a piece of ice, you can see millions of air pockets trapped inside of it. The air will cause it to rise to the water's surface.
