The Natives of Calendria (Posted on 2011-02-10) Difficulty: 2 of 5
In the kingdom of Calendria, the natives all lie during months with English names beginning with vowels and tell the truth in the other months. One native makes the following two statements:

  • I lied last month.
  • I will lie again six months from now.

In what month were the two statements made?

There are only three months beginning with vowels - 4, 8, & 10.  If the first statement were truthful, then the current month would be either 5, 9, or 11.  But none of those months are exactly six months away from 4, 8, or 10.  Therefore, the native is lying, and it is currently either month 4, 8, or 10.

The months that are six away (i.e. the converse) of these months are 10, 2, and 4 respectively.  By statement 2 being a lie, this means that the converse month cannot begin with a vowel.  The only one that fits is month 2.  Thus, it must be month 8.

Current month = AUGUST (Lie month)
Previous month = July (Truth month)
Six months in future = February (Truth month)
