Guessme Ten (Posted on 2003-05-16) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Pronounced as one letter,
And written with three,
Two letters there are,
And two only in me.
I'm double, I'm single,
I'm black, blue, and gray,
I'm read from both ends,
And the same either way.
What am I?

Some Thoughts re: Solution (spoiler) | Comment 30 of 31 |

The answer to this riddle is EYE, yet it would only be a small stretch to offer EWE as a solution:

EWE is pronounced as one letter: U. It is written with three: E-W-E. The word is comprised of two letters: E and W. The phrase "And two only in me", can not only be a reference to the two letters, but also the possibility that the ewe could be gestating a pair of ewe lambs. Sheep, though most commonly considered white, are blue (such as the bharal), black and gray. And, EWE, like EYE is a palindrome.
