Ady,

Actually, "smaller number" defined mathematically is a number closer to zero (or, superlatively - i.e., 'smallest', equal to zero).  As negative numbers approach negative infinity they do not get 'smaller', but 'larger'. 'Smaller' and 'larger' is a reference to the magnitude (absolute value) of the number. Those numbers do, of course, become less and lesser - which is a different matter.
