2.997 kg of ice at -35 degrees Celsius are thoroughly mixed with 138.6 kg of water at 3.9 degrees Celsius in a well-insulated container at standard temperature and pressure.
Determine the proportions of ice (if any) and water in the final mixture.
Bonus: what is being simulated?

Solution (w/o bonus) by Kenny M)
The original 'experiment' involves 1.386*10^9 cubic kilometers of water at 3.9 degrees Celsius, and 31.6*10^6 cubic kilometers of ice at an average of -37 Celsius, plus an additional 1.1*10^6 cubic kilometers of ice at -17 Celsius. (These figures differ depending where one looks).
The specific heat of ice (averaged over the range) is 1954.75 joules per kilogram per degree see http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/ice-thermal-properties-d_576.html.
The density of ice is 0.9167 at 0 Celsius, with the density of water assumed to be 1.
