With at least one piece of each type on the board, what is the maximum number of chess pieces you can place on a chessboard, such that no piece is under attack?
You can get quite a few pieces on the board if you place one of each of the more powerful pieces strategically and then fill the rest of the board with lowly pawns. I've tried a few different arrangements and keep ending up with 14 pawns, plus one each of the other pieces, for a total of 19. This might be the maximum.
(One example: Queen at A8, Bishop at B6, King at F1, Knight at G5, and Rook at H7. The placement of the pawns should be pretty self-explanatory from that arrangement, assuming that they're all moving in the direction of Row 1.)
