With at least one piece of each type on the board, what is the maximum number of chess pieces you can place on a chessboard, such that no piece is under attack?

.... there is nothing to state where one might be within a game,
so:
    the maximum number of pieces are those which exist on the board before play even begins.

I'm certain that is NOT what is required but it does seem to be valid under the terms.
