With at least one piece of each type on the board, what is the maximum number of chess pieces you can place on a chessboard, such that no piece is under attack?
This puzzle is extremely badly worded, vague and misleading.
As it is posted, it should have been TD-ed unless modified.

The issue of colors and the source of pieces (minimum one of a kind, what maximum?)
was not addressed and therefore left open to be decided by the solver.
To illustrate the point I am going to "solve" it as it is posted
Option 1: one color: place the minimal set of six distinct pieces of the same color(say white)
R,Kn,B,Q, & K on any six squares of the 8*8 chessboard and on all remaining squares place all the white available pieces from any sets you have and in case you don't have enough place coins, dice or any tokens to cover all the remaining 56 squares . Answer : 64 pieces
Option 2: two colors . One of numerous solutions : Place all your white non-pawn pieces in row 1, any white pieces in row 2 and pawns only in row 3.
Same principle for the opposite color: Place any BLACK pieces in rows 7 and 8, and BLACK pawns only in row 6.
Answer: 48 pieces.
No one is under attack, with "soldiers defending their superiors".
