Bargain Baffle (Posted on 2014-03-21) Difficulty: 2 of 5
Mrs. Durbin, Mrs. Johnson, and Mrs. Specter, whose first names are Darla, Hannah, and Mabel, though not necessarily in this order, went shopping for bargains after Christmas.

While shopping, Mabel spent twice as much as Hannah and Hannah spent three times as much as Darla.

If Mrs. Durbin spent $3.85 more than Mrs. Specter, what is each lady's full name and how much did they each spend?

Solution A more correct answer (spoiler) Comment 2 of 2 |
Darla spend x
Hannah spent 3x
Mabel spent 6x

The pairwise differences between them are 2x, 3x and 5x.

$3.85 is not a multiple of 2 or 3, so $3.85 = 5x,
Which makes Mabel Mrs. Durbin, and Darla Mrs. Specter.
x = $0.77, so the full answer is

Darla Specter     $0.77
Hannah Johnson $2.31
Mabel Durbin     $4.62
