Two people are talking long distance on the phone. One is in an East-Coast state of the US, the other is in a West-Coast state of the US. The first asks the other
"What time is it over there?"
Upon hearing the answer, the person says,
"That's funny. It's the same time here!".
How can this be?
The first one says "what time is it over there?" which refers to the location of the second person.
The second one says "That's funny. It's the same time here!" which also refers to the location of the second person.
Both comments are referring to the time at the same place, so that is why the reported times are the same.
One person's "there" is the other person's "here".
