Justify each of the above as a valid answer for "Odd man out" question.

I beg to differ:

If one strictly  accepts your reasoning some of your samples will become "good" just by virtue of rewording:

e.g.  Sheep is the only word in the list that has no successor.(good)

instead  of "last in the list". (bad)

You say " 3 of Charlie's 5 justifications do not meet my admittedly exacting and nitpicky standard"

I say:   Charlie's answers are ok, they adhere to commonsense ,- and this should be the only criterion to their validity .  The ambiguity is a built-in essence of OMO - type puzzles.

I, too, am relieved to get it off my chest...
