Wrapping a Regular Hexagon (Posted on 2016-10-05) Difficulty: 3 of 5
Consider a regular hexagon which is to be wrapped with a piece of paper having the shape of a regular octagon.

If the regular hexagon has unit sides, then find the smallest regular octagonal piece of paper that can be folded around the hexagon such that both the front and back sides of the hexagon are completely covered by the paper.

First approximation Comment 1 of 1
Assuming the polygons are inscribed in concentric circles.

The best arrangement appears to be when two of the hexagons lines of symmetry pass through corners of the octagon (as opposed to bisecting the sides).  In this case the octagon has sides about 1.35 times as long as the hexagon.
