Why not marry? (Posted on 2016-10-19) Difficulty: 3 of 5
In all 50 states, it’s legal for second cousins to marry. So can third cousins, fourth cousins, and cousins of any higher degree.
Alex(26,male) and Zelda(23,female) are third cousins, but cannot marry.
Why?

If they were not related, they would be perfectly eligible.

Some Thoughts Two ways. | Comment 1 of 6
They might not be in the U.S. Other countries might have prohibitions on 3rd cousin marriages. Wikipedia mentions Ethiopia in this regard.

The two might be related by marriage, in that each is married to a pair of 3rd cousins.  Their existing marriages are their only relation, and it's preventing their marriage by means of laws against polygamy.
