Why not marry? (Posted on 2016-10-19) Difficulty: 3 of 5
In all 50 states, it’s legal for second cousins to marry. So can third cousins, fourth cousins, and cousins of any higher degree.
Alex(26,male) and Zelda(23,female) are third cousins, but cannot marry.
Why?

If they were not related, they would be perfectly eligible.

another option is that they are both first and third cousins.

Specific example:
see the family tree example for third cousins here
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin
Sam and Lyla are third cousins through their respective parents Laura and Matt.

Now if their other parents Gordon and Christina were siblings then they would also be first cousins.

None of the marriages in the tree would be illegal but Sam and Lyla would not be able to marry.
