A Square Slab and a Cube (Posted on 2017-03-12) Difficulty: 3 of 5
An 11x11x1 slab can divided into pieces that fit into a 5x5x5 cube. Show that the slab must be divided into at least 9 pieces.

Find a 9 piece division such that the volume of each piece is at least 8.

Solution Pieces of the second part Comment 2 of 2 |
Here's a solution. It turned out not to be very hard to find.

The pieces are:
Three 5x4x1
One 4x4x1
One 4x3x1
One 3x3x1
Three 4x2x1

It was easy enough to fit them in the 5x5x5 that I don't feel the need to show them.  The four 1x1x1 bits left over can make an L shape in the top layer.
