And so spoke my friend the logician:
"My name is North and just now I am in the middle of the rubber
in our bridge club.
I am sitting North, the other players are called East, South & West while our first names are George, Jim, Joe & Thomas.
Joe is my partner at the table and Mr. West's partner in business.
Thomas is sitting to the left of Mr. South and George's partner is Mr. East."
Who sat where?"

Larry: in the popular card game, Contract Bridge, when one side wins two games, it's called a "rubber" (you should pardon the expression.)
So, "in the middle of a rubber", simply means, "Hey, we're playing a game and nobody has yet won." But, there is still time to figure out where each player is sitting.
And, you guessed right: bridge partners do sit in opposite seats. One partner is insulted by being called "dummy" but that's another story.
Aah, life is so much more meaningful with these little snippets. :-)
Nice prob, Adi!
