99 as an example (Posted on 2018-07-22) Difficulty: 3 of 5
The first 1000 digits of pi have exactly 99 appearences of "99".

The above sentence will be true if 99 will be replaced by another number.

What number(s?) ?

Solution re: Pi answer Comment 2 of 2 |
(In reply to Pi answer by Math Man)

Assuming the sequence of digits as provided by https://www.angio.net/pi/digits.html is correct, and "appearences" is simply a misspelling of "appearances", one may make the following observations.

The given statement is true if each occurrence of the digit string 99 in the statement is replaced by 10, as there are 10 appearances of the digit string 10 in the first 1000 digits of pi.

The number of appearances of the digit string 17 in the string of digits of the first 1000 digits of pi is 18, thus 17, though very close to the self-referential number of appearances, is not a correct answer.

If taken as a trick, the number 11 can be a valid answer, as
'the first 1000 digits of pi have exactly 11 appearances of "99".'
