What is the answer to this silly pattern... (it's clever)?

I think the problem certainly fits under 'Cryptography,' but once that is established, the solution is somewhat gieven away, or at least hinted at. 'Sequences,' on the other hand, is a total misnomer, and made the puzzle nearly impossible to solve without a few hints. Perhaps 'General' would be the best place for this particular problem.
