Let ABCD be a parallelogram. Draw QN parallel to AB with Q lying on AD and N lying on BC. Draw another line MS parallel to AD with M lying on AB and S lying on QN. Draw yet another line PT parallel to AD with P lying on CD and T lying on QN.
The area of AMSQ, BNSM, CPTN and DQTP are respectively 12, 36, 48, and 24.
What is the area of quadrilateral BSDT?

re(2): step 2 - an answer by Steven Lord)
|B | N |C
| | |
| 6x6 | 48 | (16/3)
6 | | |
| |T_____________ |P
M |__________ |S |
| 2x6 | 24 | (8/3)
2 |__________ | ______________|
A 6 Q 9 D
Now I see it not completely true that there are not fractions but it's true that most are integers.
See also che to calculate the area of BTS, you just say
6x6-1/2(6x6)-1/2(6x16/3)=2
