Solving past problems, we know that the ratio between a 4 digit number and its reversal is an integer, only when:
9801/1089 = 9, and 8712/2178 =4
or, 1089 * 9 = 9801, and: 2178*4 = 8712
In the former case, we have: A= L=9, which means that the digit 9 is assigned to more than one letter. This is a contradiction.
The latter case is perfectly valid, where :
N=2, O=.1, R = 7, A= 8, L = 5.
Accordingly, this must correspond to the solution to the given alphametic.
