There are three brothers: Adam, Brody, and Cliff. Two of the three brothers are boxers.
It is known that:
- The shorter of Adam and Brody is the older boxer.
- The younger of Brody and Cliff is the shorter boxer.
- The taller of Adam and Cliff is the younger boxer.
Which brother is NOT a boxer? Provide adequate reasoning for your answer.
There are six combinations by height - ABC, ACB, etc. By Clues 1 and 3, they yield the following results for Older/Younger boxer:
ABC = BA
ACB = BA
BAC = AA
BCA = AC
CAB = BC
CBA = AC
The third combination above is eliminated since A can't be both.
The fifth combination is eliminated because per Clue 2, C cannot be younger than B while taller than B.
This leaves two possibilities for Older/Younger boxer:
BA or AC
In both instances, the Younger boxer is also the Taller boxer:
BA -> ABc or AcB
AC -> CAb or CbA
So either:
B is Shorter and Older than A
or
A is Shorter and Older than C
Clue 2 says the shorter boxer can only be B or C. Therefore, BA:
Cliff is not the boxer.
