How quickly can you solve the abovementioned
alphametic using only p&p and a simple, non-scientific calculator?
Ones digit A + A + A + A = [x]2. So A = 3 or A = 8. And x = 1 or 3.
Tens digit: N + N + N + x = [y]2.
If x = 1, then N = 7 and y = 2.
If x = 3, then N = 3 and y = 1.
Hundreds digit: U + U + y = [z]0.
y must be even, so y = 2. Thus N = 7, x = 1, and A = 3.
Thus U = 4 and z = 1, or U = 9 and z = 2.
But if z = 2, L = 0.
So L = 1, U = 4, N = 7, A = 3.
