Two vending machines (Posted on 2023-03-02) Difficulty: 2 of 5
There are two identical vending machines dispensing bottled drinks. The probability of all drinks sold out at the end of a day is .25 for each automat. The probably of drinks in both machines being sold out is 0.17.

What is the probability of both machine being active by the end of the day?

Solution Solution Comment 2 of 2 |
Let's consider vending machines A & B.

There is a 0.25 probability of A being out.
There is a 0.17 probability of A & B being out.
Therefore, there is a 0.08 probability of A being out, but not B.

The same goes for machine B.  Thus:

Probability of both machines going out - 0.17
Probability of one machine going out - 0.16

Probability of neither machine going out - 0.67
