It's well-established in physics that black or dark-colored objects radiate heat faster and more effectively than light-colored objects.
So, in almost every building that uses steam heat, why are the radiators painted silver or some other very light color?
Radiators aren't meant to heat buildings via radiation, they're meant to heat buildings via convection.
By minimizing the heat radiation, the heat convection is relatively maximized. The radiator heats the air in its vicinity; that air circulates around the room.
