Measure out exactly 4 gallons of water (Assume you have a river handy, or some other limitless water supply).

Alternate Puzzle Solution

We will pour from the 3 gallon jug to 5 gallon jug.

Water remaining into the 3 gallon jug = 6-5 = 1 gallon.

Now, empty the 5 gallon jug, and pour 1 gallon from the 3 gallon jug.

Pour the remaining 4 gallons using the 3 gallon jug.
