Do you mean that a number 'vanishes' when it is negative? And the comment you are replying to is one sentence saying that the name of the term is discriminant insteead of determinant, and nothing about the roots or "may be something else." You wrote the problem, and that comment made less sense to me than anything anyone else has said...did I miss something?
